[The following are excerpts from a Spiritual Life discussion.]
“Love God with everything, and do as you please.”
Just today, I found myself once again explaining to someone how we are not under the Law, in regards to certain laws that come up in conversation in Christian circles. It seems to come up quite often, actually. I explain that there are two ways in which we are not under the Law (referring to the Mosaic law since that is what the questions generally refer to – think the 10 Commandments): 1) We (or most of us) are not Jewish! Since when did we have the Law in the first place? And 2) Christ was the one who fulfilled the Law, not us (for obviously reasons) – that is why our clean slate comes from looking at Him, not us. [Yes, we are left in this sin-driven body, and so it is a daily struggle as long as I have to live with this body.] The point is, there are no more rules to abide by for the one who has Christ. There is an anonymous quote which I love because I believe it really gets at the attitude and mindset in which we need to live: “Love God with everything, and do as you please.” This is only possible by the indwelling of the Holy Spirit who has changed our “hearts of stone” to “hearts of flesh”.
Our struggle is a relationship struggle, not a struggle to save a personal reputation.
So, I believe that if we ever find ourselves trying to obey some rule or law, we are probably in the wrong place as Christians. Rather, we need to find ourselves struggling to love God with all our hearts and souls and minds. This struggle will certainly confront sin’s temptations daily, but the focus is now on our relationship with God and our identity in His Son. Our struggle is a relationship struggle, not a struggle to save a personal reputation. I think of Ephesians 6:10-13, “Finally, be strong in the LORD and in the strength of HIS might. Put on the whole armor of GOD, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of GOD, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm.”
