[The following is an excerpt from a Spiritual Life discussion.]
I’ve been encouraged to really take ownership over those sin habits with which I struggle in the knowledge that Christ has (past tense!) delivered me from that way of life. Note, though, that when I say “take ownership”, I am not suggesting that I differ the act of deliverance from the Holy Spirit’s work in my life to a self-help methodology. Rather, it is claiming that which has already been given to me.
A simple analogy would be a freshmen college student who goes to his parents to ask for financial help for his schooling. His parents had already been saving up money in a dedicated bank account, and happily give him access to the account and detailed information for how to transfer that money to the school. But instead of going about the business of accomplishing that task, the student instead continually goes back to his parents to ask the same question, mentioning that the finances are getting tighter and tighter! I imagine God doing a palm-in-face quite often with us!
